Pembroke Story Maritime Exhibition

The Pembroke Story Heritage Project began on June 1st 2008 and made an almost immediate impression by staging an exhibition on June 21st during the Pembroke Festival. This sixth annual festival was held this year to coincide with the Sea Fair Milford Haven 2008.  Approriately this gave our festival a maritime theme and our exhibition was based around Pembroke's Maritime Heritage.

Seafair Haven 2008

Our venue was St Michaels Church and despite the problems (we had to assemble the exhibition and take it down in the course of one day!) we were pleased with the enthusiastic response - over 200 people came.

Below, newly appointed Project Officers Nikki Anderson and Linda Asman with volunteers Stuart Asman and Owen Vaughan.

Following this event our concern was to make headway with the project - sorting out our equipment, establishing our office space and admin procedures, networking, contacting Pembroke residents, recording memories, collecting and scanning photographs and collecting written material as well as developing this website.  Lots to do!

Then to assemble all the information collected into an Official Launch - which took place on October 25th 2008 in Pembroke Town Hall.

Official Launch of the Pembroke Story

Pembroke Town Hall was the venue for the Launch which attracted an enthusiastic response from Pembroke residents.  This is described in detail with many photographs on the main "Heritage Project" Page.  Click here

Above, the organisers, Linda and Nikki, are pictured with Pembroke Mayor, Gareth Jones and George and Jeanne Lewis against the backdrop of their amazing Pembroke Murals.

Shortly following the Launch we went live with our website.

Launch of our Website November 19th

One of our main aims is to make Pembroke's History accessible, reaching out to as many people as possible.  Therefore a website is integral to our project.  The Pembroke Story Website went live on November 19th

The website sets out to explore the amazing sweep of historical events which make up Pembroke's story, build up archives of photographs, share research, report on the progress of our projects and publicise events.

2009

January saw the publication of our 6 month programme and the introduction of our Project to Pembroke's two Junior Schools. Resources have been provided and made available on the website.  Please see Resources Page.

In order to reach as many people as possible we have varied the times and venues of our events - between Pembroke Town Hall, Pembroke 21C Community Centre and Monkton Community Centre.

Recording Your Memories - February 7th

Large numbers attended the Pembroke Story's event which gave an update on recording Pembroke residents as well as the opportunity to learn about the very successful Carew oral history project from the 'Changing Times in Carew' team.

Visitors were then able to enjoy coffee, chat and a chance to look at the exhibitions about Pembroke People assembled by Project Officers Linda Asman, Nikki Anderson and volunteers Stuart Asman and Peter Hurlow-Jones.

The programme closed with a presentation by Linda and Stuart (who provides vital IT support for the project) - a presentation of old photographs with voice overs by Pembroke residents who have allowed themselves to be recorded and whose memories are giving us a new insight into the Pembroke Story, and whithout which so much history would be lost.

The crowded Town Hall audience enjoy our Presentation of Pembroke recorded memories and old photographs.

Volunteer Workshops

Following the "Recording Your Memories" event, workshops were organised in the Community Centre to train volunteers.

1.  Interviewing techniques with Wendy Marmara

2.  Using recording equipment with Stuart Asman

Researching House History - March 5th

Researching the buildings of Pembroke forms an important part of our project.  So we asked Nikki Bosworth of Pembrokeshire Record Office to give us a talk on how to go about it using the resources of the County Archives.  Above, Nikki introduces Nikki Bosworth (pictured below).

An exhibition of old photographs of Pembroke's buildings accompanied the talk which was held in the Community Centre.

A visit to the County Records Office for our volunteers is to be arranged.

The Civil War: a talk by Terry John April 2nd.

Our April event took place in Monkton Community Hall when Terry John gave a most interesting talk on the seventeeth century Civil War, a war in which Pembroke played a significant part. Terry dressed for the part and brought along artefacts.

Tracing Your Family History - May 7th

Alan and Julie Harmer came to talk to us on May 7th about researching family history.  These two people are passionate about their subject and talk eloquently and entusiastically without the aid of the now familar PowerPoint! I speak in admiration of Alan's delivery (and also Terry's above) as I along with many speakers like to rely on the projector!

There was great interraction with the audience and everyone enjoyed the evening.
