Finding out about Monkton's Story

How do we find out?

1. By looking at the evidence around us.

The story of Monkton goes back a long way - people lived here over 10,000 years ago.  Archaeologists have found human remains and tools in the cave at Priory Farm which prove this.

Even before the castle was built we know that there was a Christian settlement here.

When the castle was built by the Normans, a Priory was also built at Monkton.  Buildings which go back to the Middle Ages can still be seen here.

... and there is the Castle of course - seen here from Monkton.

2 By looking at old photographs

We haven't many old photographs of Monkton long ago.  Here are some we have found.

These photos are interesting because they show us Monkton Priory Church as a ruin.

It was restored in the nineteenth century - here is an old postcard of Monkton Priory Church "after restoration".

This photo is interesting because it shows boats and a slipway at Monkton Bridge.

And here are pictures of royal visits -

King Edward VII

And the Queen Mother at Monkton Priory Church.

We do not have many photographs - can you help us find some more?
