Even at the height of his fame as a painter of grand historical oil paintings, Turner continued to accept commissions for work as an illustrator. This view of Pembroke Castle in Wales was one of seventy-eight prepared for a book called Picturesque Views in England and Wales which covers many different aspects of life in cities, villages and the countryside of Turner’s age.
