1817 Charles Norris: Town Walls and Castle of Pembroke

Pembroke, which gave its name to the present County of Pembrokeshire, is a mediaeval walled town complete with a magnificent castle dating back to the 11th century. Many of the great and famous form part of our story: Pembroke castle was the birthplace of Henry VII, founder of the Tudor dynasty.  More, its story stretches back into the mists of prehistory when 10,000 years ago man made his way up the Pembroke river to set up home in the Cat’s Hole Cave and Wogan’s Cavern.  Once a thriving port and agricultural centre, now - all industry gone - a tourist destination, there is so much to find out about our fascinating town.

Continuing the Pembroke Story Project

The Pembroke Story Heritage Project has run the course of its funding but we will continue the work of researching the past and raising awareness of our heritage.  In October the Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society held its inaugural meeting with Brian Griffiths acting as Chairman and Linda Asman as Secretary. Response has been very encouraging.

The Pembroke Story heritage project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  This funding finished on 31st December 2009.  The project has raised sufficient awareness and encouraged so many volunteers that Pembroke 21C will continue to develop it despite the lack of funding and will seek further funding to develop it in the future.

In October 2009 the Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society was launched.  It is a sub-group of Pembroke 21C and is an excellent outcome of the project.  The Chair of the Society is Brian Griffiths, a Trustee of Pembroke 21C.  Linda Asman, one of the Pembroke Story Project Officers, is the Secretary.  The response has been very encouraging.

Talks have already been given to the Society by Linda Asman, and by David James who spoke on the work of the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society.  In December the members travelled out to Carew where John Brock and volunteers gave a talk about the tremendous work they are carrying out at the Carew Cheriton Control.

Our next meeting is on Friday, February 12th 7.30 pm at the Foundry House Community Centre, Pembroke.  Ted Goddard will be talking to us on "Pembrokeshire Shipwrecks".

For details of what we are doing and meetings visit our BLOG on http://pembrokeandmonktonhistory.blogspot.com which will be constantly updated.
